The multidisciplinary team focuses on the unique medical, behavioral, nutritional and psychological needs of each patient. Our specialists will provide medical and surgical care to address the different causes and effects of obesity.

OUTPATIENT CENTER SPOTLIGHT: New Sleep Medicine Center in Grayslake Lurie Children’s recently opened a sleep medicine center in Grayslake for the evaluation of pediatric sleep disorders. The center provides clinical evaluation, diagnosis and management of children with sleep disorders such as sleep-disordered breathing, sleep apnea, nightmares, insomnia, parasomnias and narcolepsy. Sleep disturbances are among the most common issues raised by parents to healthcare providers and can impact a child’s behavior, school performance and health. The new center is an extension of the Sleep Medicine Program, with access to the same Lurie Children’s specialists who have seen more than 5,000 patients since the program’s opening in 1995. Sleep studies are also available at Lurie Children’s main hospital and Lurie Children’s Outpatient Center in Westchester.

New Outpatient Center in Northbrook Opening September 2015, the Lurie Children’s Outpatient Center in Northbrook will replace the current Glenview location. The new 18,000-square-foot building is designed and built to maximize efficiency and patient flow.

Research Northstar B Thalassemia Major Drug Study • Alexis Thompson, MD, PhD The clinical trial, called the Northstar Study and sponsored by bluebird bio, Inc., uses the patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells, which are treated in the laboratory with a vector called LentiGlobin BB 305 to transfer a functional human beta globin gene and restore the gene function that is defective in patients with thalassemia. The modified cells are then returned to the patient through infusion, also known as autologous stem cell transplantation. If successful, the LentiGlobin BB305 will produce enough hemoglobin to minimize or eliminate the need for regular blood transfusions.

Lumacaftor–Ivacaftor in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis Homozygous for Phe508del • Susanna McColley, MD Treatment with two medications that target the most common genetic cause of cystic fibrosis improves lung function and lowers the rate of pulmonary exacerbations, according to the results from a Phase III international clinical trial published online in the New England Journal of Medicine on May 17, 2015. Combined lumacaftor-ivacaftor therapy was shown to be safe and effective for cystic fibrosis patients with two copies of the cystic fibrosis gene mutation (F508del), found in nearly half of the patients with this disease.

New Treatment for Scaffold Creates Healthier Engineered Bladder Tissue • Arun Sharma, PhD; Earl Cheng, MD A new technique to create tissue-engineered bladders has been shown to decrease scarring and significantly increase tissue growth. The bladders are produced using scaffolds coated with antiinflammatory peptides. Tissue-engineered organs such as supplemental bladders, small arteries, skin grafts, cartilage and even a full trachea have been implanted in patients, but the procedures are still experimental, very costly and often fail. Arun Sharma, PhD; Earl Cheng, MD; Samuel Stupp, PhD; and their teams at Lurie Children’s and Northwestern University’s Simpson Querrey Institute found that by treating their scaffolds with anti-inflammatory peptide amphiphiles (AIF-PAs), they were able to significantly decrease the number of M1 macrophages while still maintaining a stable number of M2 macrophages.

Technology lifeIMAGE ReferralBox Lurie Children’s has recently begun using lifeIMAGE ReferralBox, which allows physicians to instantly and securely transfer patient images to us. Whether it’s a patient referral, consultation or second opinion for complex pediatric cases, ReferralBox speeds up the transfer of any patient images, improving quality of care.

Lurie Children’s MyChart Lurie Children’s MyChart lets families communicate with their child’s healthcare team, access test results, request prescription renewals and view appointments. If families have not yet signed up for MyChart, they can go to mychart.luriechildrens.org, complete the MyChart sign up form and submit the appropriate authorization forms. A Lurie Children’s MyChart Mobile App is available, too.

Telemedicine Program Lurie Children’s will soon be offering real-time telemedicine consults to partner hospitals around the world. Using a variety of telecommunication technologies, including real-time video conferencing equipment, hospitals from across the globe will be able to collaborate closely with Lurie Children’s specialists who can assess the patient, review diagnostic images and data and provide an expert diagnosis and treatment plan. Building off our successful tele-echo and tele-radiology programs, we will be offering outpatient consults with Lurie Children’s specialists, inpatient consults with our intensive care unit, immediate care consults with our emergency department and international patient services consults.

LEED Gold Certified The U.S. Green Building Council recently recognized Lurie Children’s sustainable design and construction with a LEED Gold certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy. A building can be green in three ways: design, construction and operations.

Twice the square footage of the old Lincoln Park facility, but energy costs have only increased by 20 percent

100% low-emission adhesives, sealants, paint, coating and carpets were used during construction to promote good indoor air quality for our patients and staff

15% of all medical equipment is safely reused

Where Kids Come First Advocacy The leading causes of adverse health and social outcomes for children and adolescents stem from environmental, behavioral, educational and socioeconomic risk factors. We use a data-driven public health model that emphasizes prevention and health promotion in the community, and develop public policies and programs to address these risks for children. For example, Lurie Children’s Emergency Department experts successfully advocated for legislation that ensures $2 million annually to the Illinois Poison Center to keep it operational. The Center is a critical resource for our patients and staff.

SCY Program

In addition, the hospital advocated for a bill to permanently put in place a program for select juveniles paroled from the Department of Juvenile Justice into a case-managed supervision program. This legislation, which is now law, was a pilot program and will expand its reach throughout all 102 counties in Illinois.

• Equitable access to high-quality mental health services

125million

$

was invested by the hospital in community benefit programs and initiatives in FY14. Community Health Needs Assessment Implementation Plan focuses on 11 specific causes of poor health outcomes. These include: 1. Motor vehicle injuries 2. Sports and outdoor activities 3. Unintentional poisoning 4. Falls 5. Sleep-related infant deaths 6. Firearm injuries 7. Child abuse 8. Suicide and depression 9. Asthma and other ambulatory care sensitive conditions 10. Complex chronic conditions 11. Obesity, nutrition and physical activity

Strengthening Chicago’s Youth is a violence prevention collaborative to support, coordinate and unite partners to promote policy and environmental change to prevent violence before it occurs. With the goal of educating and raising awareness about effective ways to reduce and prevent youth violence, SCY’s approach is concentrated on five focus areas. • Sustained investment in children and youth • Common sense approaches to gun violence prevention • A juvenile justice system that reflects what we know about

adolescent development • Sustained investment in strong communities

Community Benefit Despite severe government funding challenges, Lurie Children’s has remained steadfast in its commitment to partner with the government and others to improve the health and well-being of children locally, nationally and globally. In FY14, the hospital invested $125 million in community benefit programs and initiatives. This includes $88 million in losses to the hospital and our physicians due to under-reimbursement from the Medicaid program. Medicaid is the single largest insurer of children in our country, and one in three children in Chicago rely upon the service. Lurie Children’s treats more children insured by Medicaid than any other hospital in Illinois. Because more than 50 percent of our inpatients are insured by Medicaid, Lurie Children’s was one of 19 hospitals in Illinois deemed a “safety net hospital” by the state in 2012.

Community Health Needs Assessment In order to guide Lurie Children’s continuing efforts to improve child and adolescent health and well-being in Chicago, we conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment and created an implementation plan. The plan focuses on 11 specific causes of poor health outcomes for children that were identified in the assessment. In addition, it makes three over-arching recommendations: 1. Continued strong commitment to reducing injury, better management of asthma and other chronic conditions in the community setting, and prevention of obesity 2. T ogether with outside partners, seek ways to reduce sleep-related infant death and increase access to mental health services 3. Expand partnerships with community-based providers for children with medical complexity

Philanthropy Support during the last year has helped save and improve more than 150,000 young lives. More than $50.8 million dollars was raised by 47,000 donors to support the hospital and its programs. Lurie Children’s relies on philanthropic funding to enhance its programs and services for children and families. To learn more, please call Lurie Children’s Foundation at 312.227.7500.

Child Life For some children, coming to the hospital can feel like visiting a foreign country. Our team of child life specialists works to make things easy to understand. Our team helps patients understand medical procedures through play with medical equipment, looking at pictures and talking about what to expect. Our specialists use their training in child development to create an environment that is welcoming and supports a partnership with the patient and family.

4 live shows

are produced by Skylight TV every week for patients.

Interpretation Services More than 15 percent of our patient families speak a language other than English as their primary language. Our team provides immediate access to interpreters through in-person, video and telephonic interpretation.

Skylight TV One of the first of its kind in the country, Skylight TV is the hospital’s closed-circuit, interactive television station available in patient rooms. Skylight TV produces four live shows every week along with other special programs, giving patients another outlet for relaxation and distraction.

Volunteers Volunteers serve in a variety of roles throughout the hospital. They are trained and supervised by hospital staff, and are an integral part of the family-centered care that makes Lurie Children’s a place where kids come first. Last year, nearly 1,400 volunteers provided over 61,000 hours of play activities, rest for parents, hospitality and other services to our patients and families.

Patient Satisfaction In FY14, Lurie Children’s collected information on the patient experience and how we can continue to improve and offer every patient and family a positive experience.

91.5%

of our outpatient surgery respondents would recommend our facility and another 89% of outpatient services respondents would also.

90%

of our inpatient respondents said they would recommend our hospital.

90.7%
