Their team: • Physicians • Nurses • Psychiatrists and mental health professionals • Dietitians • Therapists • Counselors in wellness, spirituality, and family Hanley Center pioneered older adult treatment in 1998 and remains the leader in effective age and generational treatment with the Center for Boomer Recovery and the Center for Older Adult Recovery. The gender-specific rehabilitation at Hanley Center fosters peer support and offers effective tools for sustained recovery. An on-staff epidemiologist leads collaborative research to identify patterns and trends in addiction, relapse prevention and recovery in order to introduce the most effective treatment modalities for highly individualized care. 2 | HanleyCenter.org

A FAMILY’S VISION Hanley Center became a reality in 1986. Mary Jane Hanley, in recovery from alcoholism, and her husband, John (Jack) W. Hanley, decided to dedicate their efforts to open a quality nonprofit treatment facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. From the beginning, Hanley Center has been a vital community partner in providing prevention education services for all ages.

CARON TREATMENT CENTERS Today, Hanley Center is part of the Caron Treatment Centers family, a nationally recognized nonprofit provider of alcohol and drug addiction treatment. Caron offers the most comprehensive treatment programs ranging from adolescents to adults, and older adults. Together, these organizations form the largest and most comprehensive nonprofit provider of addiction treatment programs in the United States when measured by treatment services revenue. All staff members have experience in the treatment of co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, to address the increasingly complex mental health issues of patients. For more than 53 years, Caron Treatment Centers has served as one of the oldest and largest treatment facilities in the United States. Caron operates residential treatment centers in Wernersville, Pennsylvania; Princeton, Texas; Boca Raton, Florida; West Palm Beach, Florida and Vero Beach, Florida. Regional offices are located in Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Bermuda. Breakthrough at Caron is a 5½ day program on the Pennsylvania campus designed to help adults “break through” habits, defenses and patterns that interfere with healthy relationships and practices. For more than 20 years, Caron has served students, teachers and parents through the Student Assistance Program (SAP), which provides education and early intervention services to help reduce the incidence and effects of drug and alcohol abuse and dependency.

WHAT TO EXPECT Asking for help for an addiction can be painful and frightening, yet it ultimately brings reassurance and relief. Hanley Center is a safe and compassionate community where men, women and their families can begin to mend their health and relationships.

Key components of Hanley Center’s treatment services include:

The average length of stay of Hanley Center’s residential primary care programs is four to six weeks; a longer period of residential care may be recommended for older adults, based on their needs and circumstances.

• Family services

Upon admission to Hanley Center, each patient is guided through a seamless process that includes a safe and comfortable detox, if necessary, and thorough assessments of personal history, medical/physical condition and spiritual health. A psychological assessment evaluates emotional and behavioral health. Results of these various assessments allow the multidisciplinary treatment team to develop master treatment plans.

• Continuing care planning

• Psychological and medical services, including acute medical care and SPECT brain image scanning • Group and individual therapy • Spiritual care • Wellness activities • Relapse prevention

Assessments are conducted during primary care to develop and enhance an individualized treatment plan for each patient. Upon discharge from Hanley Center, a personalized roadmap to recovery is implemented for each patient and provides support and guidance to them and their families for two years.

“This was one of the hardest times in my life. I am so grateful for all that Hanley did to help me overcome my disease. I owe you everything for showing me how to save my sanity, my happiness and my life.” –David

MEDICAL SERVICES Hanley Center provides medically managed detoxification and related medical and mental health services in a safe and comfortable environment. Hanley Center’s medical team is led by a noted addictionologist. Staff members are trained to treat medical conditions and various addictions. The medical team consists of mental and physical health professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists and psychiatrists, and other wellness staff.

MANAGING CHRONIC PAIN Chronic pain can easily deter patients from focusing on their recovery. Hanley Center treats chronic pain holistically and individually managing and reducing a patient’s pain without addictive drugs, which can exacerbate pain over time. Treatment is conducted with a multidisciplinary approach that includes: • Acupuncture • Massage therapy

Hanley Center has the capability to treat medical acuity as well as chronic and co-occurring medical conditions, such as:

• Spiritual care

• Diabetes

Alternate therapies are designed based on individual needs.

• High blood pressure • Hepatitis C • Liver disease • Hypertension • Hypothyroidism • Anemia • Malnutrition Medication management and alternate therapies can also be integrated into each patient’s customized treatment plan based on clinical need. 6 | HanleyCenter.org

SPECT BRAIN IMAGE SCANNING Hanley Center was the first treatment center on the East Coast to implement revolutionary Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) technology. By measuring blood flow to the brain, a SPECT scan can detect evidence of brain trauma, depression and brain malfunctions that can contribute to addiction. Each scan is invaluable in psycho-education as the results enable Hanley Center to demonstrate in real time the neuro-biological effects of addiction on the brain and the healing power of sobriety.

• Wellness activities

Non-addicting pain medications may also be prescribed for pain control. The medical staff oversees each patient’s pain-management treatment plan to ensure the patient is physically comfortable and able to go about their daily activities without assistance. The ultimate goal is to enable the patient to embrace and maintain a healthy lifestyle free of addictive medications. Long-term recovery includes skill building and accessible therapies to reduce or eliminate debilitating pain.

RESIDENTIAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM If you are concerned that you or your loved one has a problem with alcohol, medications or other drugs, Hanley Center’s Residential Assessment Program can provide guidance and help. The Assessment Program is provided to adults who are unsure if they have a substance abuse problem or even drug and alcohol addiction, prior to their committing to an addiction treatment program. The residential program is 10 days in length and evaluates patients through a series of tests and subsequent analysis. Tests include a psychological assessment, a SPECT scan and a medical/physical examination. Once testing is complete and the analysis performed, the patient receives a proposed treatment plan. Throughout their stay, patients participating in the Assessment Program are engaged in age and genderspecific residential treatment units with other patients. Patients participate in counseling sessions focused on psychosocial parameters, wellness and spirituality. Hanley Center’s assessment program allows individuals to transition more easily into a residential addiction treatment program, if necessary. Through the evaluation phase and experiences with other patients, Hanley Center’s Assessment Program serves as a stepping-stone for treatment and recovery. The program offers a safe and comfortable evaluation process and the knowledge that customized care is available.

THE CENTER FOR MEN’S RECOVERY

THE CENTER FOR WOMEN’S RECOVERY Hanley Center recognizes that women suffer greater physical consequences from alcohol and chemical addictions than men. Women become addicted faster and experience trauma and co-occurring disorders at a higher rate. Eating disorders and other process addictions are often linked to women’s substance abuse. Societal expectations and traditions encourage women to care for and nurture others, often at the expense of their own needs, identity and health. Hanley Center is a leader in gender-specific treatment having opened its Center for Women’s Recovery in 2000. The program is specifically designed to address the needs of women between the ages of 18 and 46. An allfemale, highly trained addiction therapy staff provides a safe and nurturing environment and assists women with the integration of the 12-Steps to learn to reconnect with their sense of self. At Hanley Center, women begin to renew their relationships with self and others as they achieve a holistic equilibrium. During primary treatment, specific women’s issues are addressed: • Alcohol and drug abuse education • Relationships • Shame and guilt • Parenting/Co-Parenting • Hormonal shifts • Relapse prevention • Stress • Loss of identity • Spiritual disconnection • Sexuality • Intimacy

Women undergo expressive and experiential therapies, peer interaction and support, and group and individual therapies while learning about the disease of addiction. Individualized treatment plans may incorporate psychological and psychiatric therapies and medical care when necessary. Each woman finds her own path to self-care and relapse prevention with a Hanley Center Hormonal Assessment. Through self-report, women learn to track triggers throughout their cycle or menopause, and to identify healthy coping behaviors and habits that will serve them through life’s stages. Assessments by the multidisciplinary treatment team are conducted throughout a woman’s stay in order to develop a customized continuing care plan.

Hanley Center believes that men have male-specific issues that are rooted in societal values that mold the stereotypical “American male” profile. Men are looked upon as strong and self-reliant, making it difficult for them to express emotions in healthy ways. This pressure to avoid expressing feelings can contribute to men using alcohol and drugs. The Center for Men’s Recovery is designed specifically for men between the ages of 18 and 46. The residential treatment program, with a highly-trained all-male addiction therapy staff, provides a safe and supportive environment where perceptions and destructive behavior patterns are challenged. Throughout treatment, men discover the support, honesty and rehabilitation power of a peer group in recovery. After a thorough assessment and stabilizing detox, if necessary, a man’s gender-specific, primary treatment stay focuses on: • Alcohol and drug abuse education • Relationships • Relapse prevention • Managing anger through healthy expression of emotions • Emotional isolation and trust • Spiritual disconnection • Sexuality • Intimacy Men participate in experiential therapies, peer interaction and support, and group and individual therapies. As men explore the 12-Steps, they learn how to be honest about feelings and experiences. This is liberating and advances life without a chemical crutch.

THE CENTER FOR BOOMER RECOVERY Based on years of experience and age-specific research, Hanley Center’s team of professionals developed the pioneering Center for Boomer Recovery Program in 2009. This innovative residential treatment program guides adults aged 46-64 (often referred to as the Baby Boomer generation) through the recovery process by addressing a mind-set and barriers to recovery that are unique to this generation.

Adults entering the Center for Boomer Recovery often face major social challenges regarding relationships, careers, financial pressures and legal troubles. Treatment for boomers includes specialty group therapy sessions that focus on:

The Center for Boomer Recovery engages mature adults in recovery through coeducational living and individual and gender-specific group therapies. In an interactive approach that authentically addresses generational value systems and current life stressors, treatment becomes the catalyst of holistic health and energy.

• Relationships – spouse, grandparenting, family and blended families

• Gender-related issues such as intimacy • Anger • “Sandwich” generation responsibilities

• Grief and loss • Codependency • Issues at work • Building a sense of purpose

Detoxification and treatment among boomers can sometimes be a slower process based on long-term substance abuse and/or serious medical and cooccurring disorders. Because of these issues, the average length of stay in the Center for Boomer Recovery is 60 to 90 days. After a stabilizing detox and assessment, patients participate with their multidisciplinary treatment team in the development of a holistic treatment plan, setting realistic and achievable goals.

“I can’t thank you enough for everything Hanley has done for me. Thanks for giving me hope and believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

As boomers go through the recovery process at Hanley Center, they learn about the disease of addiction and its bio-neurological basis. Adults participate in experiential, group and individual therapies and peer interaction and support. Psychological and psychiatric therapies also may be incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan based on clinical need. Hanley Center emphasizes 12Step support programs, and as patients progress further in their recovery they have the opportunity to attend offsite sober meetings. Assessments by the multidisciplinary treatment team are conducted throughout an individual’s stay. This is fundamental to developing an individualized continuing care plan.

THE CENTER FOR OLDER ADULT RECOVERY Hanley Center is a pioneer and renowned leader in age-specific addiction treatment for men and women aged 65 and older. At least one-third of all older adults suffer from late onset addiction, usually because of risk factors that include major life transitions, grief, isolation, chronic pain and depression. As a result, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse have reached epidemic proportions among this population. Members of a generation that were raised to regard substance abuse as shameful and reckless now struggle in silence, often without family or friends to witness the warning signs of addiction. When seen, the signs are often mistaken as part of the aging process. Older adults begin their recovery journey at Hanley Center with a period of medically managed detoxification, stabilization and a holistic assessment. A longer detox and a slower treatment process address physical, emotional, social, spiritual and cognitive issues and aging factors. Acute medical care is provided by 24/7 nursing care and onstaff physicians. The average length of stay for older adults is determined by individual stabilization and recovery progress. Every older adult receives a customized treatment plan that addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of their lives. A multidisciplinary team consisting of addiction therapists, skilled medical personnel, psychiatrists, psychologists and spiritual care staff will care for each older adult and monitor the progress of their treatment plan. Staff members understand the needs of older adults and take into account: • The need for slower transitions between levels of care

Hanley Center believes that effectively treating older adults requires an intimate understanding of what makes their struggles unique. During treatment, specific issues related to older adults are addressed in group therapy, such as:

• Complications that may arise because of cognitive function levels

• Loneliness and isolation

• Speech or hearing impairments

• Life transitions

• The need for longer rest and relaxation periods: Every day starts with a communal stretch, which brings opportunities for emotional and spiritual growth along with improved physical strength.

• Depression

“I am eternally grateful because you showed me a way out of my madness and I made a decision to live again. Hanley made me realize I had something to live for.” –Michael

• Loss of memory secondary to addiction • Malignant shame and guilt • Accidental addiction -- “The Prescription Drug Trap” • Lack of purpose/loss of identity

• Grief and loss • Relationships • Medical concerns

During treatment, an older adult’s health, mobility and cognition will improve markedly.

• Pain management Older adults will participate in psycho-education about the disease of addiction, which helps remove the stigma and barriers to recovery, as well as individual therapy, and peer interaction and support. Psychological and psychiatric therapies may be incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan based on clinical need. Education and participation in 12-Step support groups are a key component to the treatment process. A “Sober Seniors” support group, one of the largest of its kind in the country, is held weekly at Hanley Center.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES Group and individual psychological services are included within a patient’s treatment at Hanley Center. A psychological evaluation is done on each patient to gather information regarding a patient’s substance abuse, mental health and family background. When psychology staff identifies co-occurring disorders, these are psychiatrically and/or psychologically treated in conjunction with an individual’s primary addiction(s). Such co-occurring disorders may include depression, anxiety and eating disorders. Hanley Center’s psychological services are individualized and include the use of evidence based therapies such as: • Cognitive behavior therapy • Rational emotive behavior therapy • Motivational interviewing • Dual-focus group therapy • EMDR psychotherapy Psychology staff members collaborate with each patient’s multidisciplinary treatment team to review a patient’s progress and identify any further psychological issues that may emerge during treatment.

SPIRITUAL CARE Spirituality is the essence of how we live our lives and is a core component of a 12-Step program of recovery. The fundamental spiritual issue of every person is connection: the state and progress of one’s relationships with self, others, the universe and the transcendent. Spirituality also is indicated by the capacity to maintain intimate, lasting relationships in healthy ways.

“Hanley is a magical place and I am more than thankful for all of your efforts to help me heal when I truly thought there was no way out.” –Shannon 16 | HanleyCenter.org

Hanley Center’s spiritual counselors, one component of each patient’s multidisciplinary treatment team, are guides for individual spiritual growth based on the 12Step tradition and practice. These dedicated counselors guide each patient from detoxification through discharge regardless of religious background and/or beliefs, allowing them to better manage grief, regain dignity and form creative, life-giving, intimate relationships with themselves and others. The spiritual counselors utilize lectures, group and individual therapy to assist patients and their families in moving forward in recovery. In addition, every week patients, their families and the recovery community are welcome to join the Hanley Center Sunday interfaith service. 866 4HANLEY | 17

WELLNESS AND RECREATION SERVICES Hanley Center incorporates wellness and recreational services into each patient’s individualized treatment plan, with the goal of learning to use leisure time to enhance one’s physical, mental and spiritual health. Hanley Center’s campus features: • A jogging path/walking trail with exercise stations • A pool for fitness swimming, water volleyball and aqua therapy • Fully equipped gym with an array of cardio and weight equipment • Outdoor basketball court • Acupuncture • Massage therapy The wellness staff is comprised of experienced professionals who provide counseling in the areas of exercise, leisure skills and healthy recreation. Patients have regularly scheduled time for various fitness and recreational activities. The goal is to allow them to incorporate physical exercise into their recovery program, practice mind-body techniques, or learn wellness skills that they can carry with them in their recovery. Patients participate in experiential exercises such as trust walks, ropes course and team-building exercises. These activities require teamwork and promote trust, communication, problem solving and having fun while sober.

FAMILY SERVICES Hanley Center recognizes that the disease of addiction affects the entire family. Every family member suffers physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Often the family suffers in silence and without support. Hanley Center places a major emphasis on involving the family in the treatment and recovery process. Family members are encouraged to attend Hanley Center’s five-day family program to learn about addiction and develop tools for their own recovery. The program helps the patient and the family understand the emotional consequences of addiction, the recovery process and how families heal. The program is available at no cost to family members (18 and older) who have a loved one within any of Hanley Center’s age-specific treatment programs. The program is based on lecture and interactive group learning, which allows patients and families to gain deeper awareness and understanding of each other. Family members and patients gain a new appreciation of the roots of this chronic, neuro-biological disease, as well as behavior patterns that can enable addiction or support recovery. The program explores topics such as: • Addiction as a progressive disease • Codependency • Enabling addiction vs. supporting recovery • The 12-Steps for families • Introduction to Al-Anon • The relapse process • Healthy communication and boundaries

CONTINUING CARE Hanley Center’s continuing care services provide support and guidance to patients and families for two years after a patient is discharged, with the goal of Recovery for Life. Every patient plays a key role in developing his or her own continuing care plan – a personalized roadmap for recovery. Each patient’s continuing care plan includes recommendations from the multidisciplinary treatment team – an individual’s primary addiction counselor and medical, psychiatry, psychology, spiritual care and wellness staffs. Each professional will make recommendations to address individual needs for recovery. Recommendations for continuing care may include a broad range of services to address one’s physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health, including (but not limited to): • Extended residential treatment • Transitional living facility (halfway house) • Intensive outpatient program • Individual or group outpatient psychotherapy • Psychiatric care • Appointments with primary physician and/or specialists • 12-Step meeting attendance • Age- or gender-specific aftercare support groups • Family support groups and/or Al-Anon • Nutritional counseling A Hanley Center alumni aftercare coordinator provides each patient with a Hanley Center alumnus or AA/NA contact where the patient lives and facilitates the initial contact. The alumni coordinator reviews support groups in a patient’s area, and helps identify 12-Step groups that will be critical to attend. Patients and a family member receive continuing care support for two years following treatment.
