Setting up a Microsoft Outlook Account What you need to know NOTE: Please contact the Help Desk of your Internet Service Provider (ISP) before setting up Microsoft Outlook as your mail program. You need to know the exact address of your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) which only they can provide.

NOTE: These steps are included to assist you in setting up your e-mail account and reflect Outlook 2003. Should you require assistance, please call TREB’s Help Desk at (416)443-8111.

Microsoft Outlook is a personal and contact management program with an e-mail component. By using Outlook you are able to store your Contacts and E-mail Messages (as well as your Calendar appointments) on your personal computer. You can also archive and/or backup messages, calendar items, and contacts. The topics in this segment describe how to set up an e-mail account in Microsoft Outlook. To successfully complete the procedures outlined in this article, you must have Microsoft Outlook installed on your computer. To check if Microsoft Outlook is on your computer, go to the Task bar, click Start and point to Programs. If you have Microsoft Outlook on your machine, you will see it in the Program list.

Setting up a Microsoft Outlook e-mail account To set up your e-mail account: 1. In the Task bar, click Start. 2. In the Start menu, point to Programs, then click Microsoft Office then Microsoft Office Outlook. Microsoft Outlook opens. 3. In the Menu bar, click Tools, then E-mail Accounts.

4. In the E-mail Accounts wizard, click the radio button beside Add a new e-mail account.

5. Click Next. 6. In the Server Type screen, click the radio button beside POP3 if you are setting a Trebnet.com account. (Hint: If you are setting up a different ISP account, refer to your ISP’s set-up instructions.)

7. Click Next. The Internet E-mail Settings dialogue box appears. Each field must be completed for your e-mail account to work.

8. Under User Information, type your name, as you want people to see it when they get mail from you, beside Your Name. 9. Type your trebnet e-mail address beside E-mail Address.

10. Under Logon Information, type your User Name and E-mail Password. These were assigned to you when you became a TREB member. TIP: If your e-mail address is [email protected], then your user name is ssmith. The e-mail password is in the TREB welcome letter. If you do not know what your user name and/or e- mail password is then contact the Help Desk at 416-443-8111.

11. Under Server Information: • Type mail.trebnet.com beside Incoming mail server (POP3). • Type your ISP’s SMTP beside Outgoing mail server. For example, if Rogers is your ISP, your SMTP is probably smtp.broadband.rogers.com. If Sympatico is your ISP, then your SMTP is either smtp1.sympatico.ca , or smtp8.symatico.ca. Check with your provider to confirm these. • Place a check mark beside Remember password if desired. • Do not place a check mark beside Log on using Secure Password Authentication. 12. Click More Settings. The Internet E-mail Settings dialogue box opens.

• Place a check mark beside My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. • Click on Log on using. Type your user name, which is your e-mail address with your ISP, for example [email protected]. Type your password used to access your e-mail (your ISP e-mail address password). If you don’t remember your password, call the Help Desk of your ISP. • Click OK. 13. Click Next. A congratulations screen appears confirming that your e-mail account has been set up successfully. 14. Click Finish to exit the Internet Accounts dialogue box. You have successfully set up your trebnet e-mail using Outlook. To make Microsoft Outlook your default mail programme, go to the following section.

Using Microsoft Outlook as your default e-mail program If you intend to use Microsoft Outlook as your default e-mail program, you will need make the following adjustments in Internet Explorer. To make Microsoft Outlook your default e-mail program: 1. Double-click the Internet Explorer shortcut on your desktop to start the program. 2. In the Menu bar, click Tools, then Internet Options. 3. In the Internet Options dialogue box, click the Programs tab.

4. Click the down arrow beside the E-mail field and select Microsoft Outlook. 5. Click the down arrow beside the Contact list field, select Microsoft Outlook, then click OK. 6. To close Internet Explorer, click the X in the upper right hand corner of your browser. You have successfully set up Microsoft Outlook and may begin using it to e-mail. TIP: If you open Outlook Express after setting up Microsoft Outlook as your default e-mail programme, the following dialogue box may appear. To avoid problems with Microsoft Outlook, click No.
