COURSE CONTENT

Year 7 starts with a project on self portrait & identity, followed by a project on Food & Pop Art which includes some work in 3D. Projects include the study of work by artists in a variety of styles, as well as working in a range of materials.

COURSE CONTENT Students have an exciting introduction to the world of Design and Technology working in a range of material areas. Projects are set allowing students to develop their individual learning ability giving them the knowledge to identify the next steps to take. Students use and develop their creativity to produce quality outcomes that they see have a clear purpose. Projects are fast moving with a varied range of quick outcomes which keeps up creativity and interest. Projects and skills learnt include; • The history of design and how to make a successful structure. • Developing a range of decorative graphic and textile techniques to adorn school stationery, this has also linked in with the Learn to Learn syllabus. • A mixed materials packaging project where students make every element of a creatively packaged cake for a celebration or gift. • A module introducing healthy eating where students can achieve a bronze award accredited through Sainsbury’s and the Design and Technology Association. • A project that introduces smart materials and there possibilities within design and technology.

HOMEWORK/COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS A range of homework tasks are set according to individual modules. Research, investigation and design tasks are all common and students will be asked to focus on the presentation of the work they produce. During the healthy eating module students will be required to bring in ingredients from home. Worksheets giving a full list of ingredients and quantities will be provided.

Drama lessons are part of the new Learning to Learn curriculum which is thematic and encourages the development of certain attitudes, skills and knowledge crucial to learning.

COURSE CONTENT LRC sessions – Once a fortnight each year 7 class has a session in the Library, working through tasks designed to boost literacy. This includes reading to an adult, ICT tasks and a booklet of tasks for students to work through. The Deserted House – Using a poem as stimulus, students look at persuasive writing and try to sell an old shack! ‘Abomination’ by Robert Swindells – Class reading of the novel, followed by a range of tasks to encourage empathy. Independent Research – Students choose a topic of interest and find information from a range of sources before planning and delivering a presentation to the class. Poetry – Students study a range of poetic techniques and use them to write their own poetry. Shakespeare ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ – Students read extracts from the script and complete a number of creative tasks, including role play and writing in role. ‘Collision Course’ – Class reading of the play, which explores the idea of justice and culminates in a whole class role play of a trial. Creative writing ‘The Quest’ – Students undertake a number of problem solving tasks as they write their adventure story. Media – Students study news reports before producing their own newspapers and TV broadcasts.

HOMEWORK/COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS Homework is included in this VLE based course. The ICT department also regularly run homework and coursework booster sessions for students who might feel they need extra help. The classes usually take place at lunch time, and their aim is to support the student and offer advice to enable them to produce their personal best as well as giving further access to the college ICT equipment and software.

Year: 7

COURSE CONTENT St.Luke's is offering a fantastic new course to students in Year 7. Learning to Learn is just what it says...your child will learn how to learn, acquiring the attitudes and skills necessary to help them survive in all walks of life. These attitudes and skills will be taught in lessons which combine Drama, Geography, History, PSHE and RE. The content of these subjects will still be taught, as they are still as important, however learning skills for life will help equip them for the future. For five lessons a week these and many other attitudes and skills will be promoted and developed in Learning to Learn lessons. The course covers six modules of approximately half a term duration each including: Module 1: My, myself, I – me as a learner, my personal history Module 2: Culture and creativity – symbols, beliefs and values, Pagan Christian and Victorian traditions, Victorian Christmas Module 3: Justice – rights and responsibilities, including food, R & R. Crime & punishment including witch trials, the justice system and contemporary court rooms. Module 4: Discovery – journeys, explorers, migration to and from the UK. Module 5: Working towards the future – jobs in the past, trade, personal finance and aspiration Module 6: My City – Why did people settle in the Exe Valley, exploring historic Exeter, my local community.

COURSE CONTENT

Mathematics is split up into four main subject areas – Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, and Handling Data. We aim to deliver all areas at some level, dependant on the ability of the class. In year 7, we set according to ability, using their Key Stage 2 levels as well as their primary schools teacher assessed grades. We have some single sex groupings and some mixed. We assess each group regularly through assessment tasks and half termly formal tests. We also set regular homework to ensure understanding of each topic and to consolidate the work we do in class.

ST LUKE’S SCIENCE & SPORTS COLLEGE SUBJECT: MFL

Year: 7

COURSE CONTENT Students begin French or Spanish in Year 7 as a main language and follow the other language as a subsidary until year 9. The programme of study is divided into four areas of attainment: Speaking, listening, reading and writing. A bilingual dictionary is an absolute necessity for all students and the department offers the opportunity of purchasing one at a reduced rate during the students’ first term here. French Students study from the text book Equipe 1 Nouvelle. There are 9 chapters of the book and we aim to study three chapters per term. The book is supplemented with extra grammar and writing exercises provided by the teacher. Homework is given once per week and consists of either a vocabulary list or a written exercise. Spanish Spanish was introduced in 2005/6 which means that the programmes of study in years 7 and 8 are the same. Students are working from Listos 1 text book. The department has Listos 2 and 3 textbooks which will form the basis of the students’ programme of study in the following year. Again homework is set once a week and consists of a written or learning task. We have access to a Spanish-speaking Foreign language assistant who occasionally helps with our Key Stage 3 classes.

Year: 7

COURSE CONTENT Overview Music is taught to all students for a one hour session per week. A vast variety of topics are experienced keeping the interests of many a keen student, equipping them with reasoned personal judgements, developing considered personal opinions and encouraging sensitivity of expression. Extra Curricula Instrumental lessons are currently offered on flute, sax, clarinet, keyboard, drums, trumpet, violin, viola and guitar. Students will experience a vast variety of lessons with rhythm as the main focus from graphic scores to traditional notation, from personal performance to group compositions. An awareness of keyboards is experienced making sure that all students are familiar with the notes of a keyboard using individual, group performance and solo improvisation. The main stream historical styles and their compositional quirks are taught using both cross curricula and performing ideas taken from the most popular pieces from each period. Traditional instrumental awareness is taught using IT and a personal hands-on approach. Our dedicated music IT suite is used to encourage students to make arrangements of prerecorded midi clips and also to teach and test other topics covered.

Students are taught through Fundamental Skill Development (e.g. Kick; Catch; Throw; Run; Hit; Field, Move), in a varied sport, gymnastics and dance programme.

ST LUKE’S SCIENCE & SPORTS COLLEGE SUBJECT: Religious Education

Year: 7

COURSE CONTENT

Most of the learning in RE in year 7 is done through the Learning To Learn syllabus. We investigate belief, pilgrimage, traditions, celebrations and the diversity of faith in Exeter. There is also one hour of RE per fortnight given to the study of different religions and how we communicate belief. In term 1 we investigate how belief can be demonstrated through story telling, music, art, poetry and dance. In term 2 we look at the 6 main world religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism) and focus on a key aspect of each religion, e.g. the 5K’s of Sikhism. In term 3 we learn about the creation stories of religions and older belief systems such as the Aborigines and Native Americans. The emphasis is on developing thinking and learning skills.

The Usborne Encyclopedia of World Religions: this is a very accessible book with links to recommended websites throughout.

HOMEWORK/COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS

As part of the Learning to Learn course a passport of skills completed is filled in by each student as evidence of learning. The RE lessons culminate in completing a mini project on any religion of the student’s choice.

COURSE CONTENT

Students study 6 units of work that cover parts of the new national curriculum. 1. Who am I? - Cells, reproduction and variation. 2. Who dunit? – Particle model of matter, simple chemical reactions and solutions. 3. School Dinners – Food, digestion, respiration and what does fit and healthy mean? 4. Bright Sparks – Energy resources, electricity and electrical circuits and magnets. 5. Acid attack – Acids, alkalis and simple chemical reactions. 6. Ready Steady Go (Sports Day) – Forces and speed.
